About the Greater San Joaquin Umpire
Association
The
Greater San Joaquin Softball Association offers one of the best umpire
programs in the nation. Our training program goes to great lengths to
get our umpires prepared for the season. This way we can offer a
consistent, organized effort week in and week out.
Our
Umpire in Chief, Jim Winchester recently accepted the position after 33
years with former UIC Frank Cortez. Jim has been involved as an Umpire
In Chief with the City of Lodi for many years and served as the
assistant to Frank for many years. Greater San Joaquin can lay claim to
having seven umpires become rated ISF (International Softball
Federation) which is the highest achievement for an ASA umpire. In an
association of our size, that is per capita well above any other nation
wide. Greater San Joaquin can also say we had one of the two American
umpires selected to the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia There has
been 61 umpires selected to the National Indicator Fraternity, which
represents having worked three national tournaments, and several more
are on the cuff of that honor.
However,
we would be remiss if we did not mention the hundreds of umpires who
work recreation softball in all the cities of our association. Without
their continued effort, the backbone of the program would not be as
successful, and our achievements would not be as impressive.
If
you want to become an umpire, it is a great part time job that works
