| Notes
of Appreciation on Retirement: |
Jim,
I want to add my congratulations to the many well wishes which you
are receiving on your retirement as Umpire-in-Chief. At the right
time you were the right person to rebuild an umpire program that
needed your leadership and guidance. It was an honor and a
privilege to serve as one of your fellow Umpires-in-Chief in the
Pacific Coast Region (14). But I’m most proud and happy of the
opportunity to call you my friend. Have a long, healthy retirement
and stop by to see us every time you get the chance. You are
always welcomed in Southern California.
Phil Gutierrez, Commissioner ASA of Southern California |

| Jim
Winchester is Mr. Softball in Lodi, and we're just not letting him
retire. That's all there is to it. We expect you to be
at work on opening night! Jimmy doesn't just handle
umpires, he takes good care of everyone that comes to the
ballpark.
I may be his supervisor, but I'm not sure who tells whom what
to do. Jim, congratulations on your outstanding
service to ASA and for making softball a better game.

Jimmy;
What can I say? You have been an inspiration to me and so many
other umpires over the years. We are better umpires and better
people because you have been in our lives. Your level headedness
and even disposition will be sorely missed. It has been my
pleasure to be your deputy and your friend, and I will especially
miss you.

I first
met Jim and Vera in the early 80’s at the Lodi softball
complex. Jim would be the UIC for the tournament; Vera would
be in the trailer preparing food for the umpires working the
weekend tournaments. Jim would be making sure things were
going well, keeping things on the straight and narrow. A
tireless worker, Jim was always there with a good word and letting
you know what you needed to improve on. Jim later became the
Greater San Joaquin Umpire in Chief and continued his tireless
efforts to improve every umpire as well as the overall
program. It has been a pleasure and honor to have known Jim
and Vera, he has contributed much to the ASA program, not only to
the Greater San Joaquin Association but to the Pacific Coast
Region. I wish Jim and Vera the very best in their
retirement years; they have left their mark on all of us that have
had the pleasure of knowing them. All the Best! Happy
Trails!
