Background Check Information

Beginning 2009 ASA Region 14 instituted background checks for all umpires.  This follows mandatory background checks for coaches, which is already in place, and is in preparation for nationwide mandatory background checks soon to be implemented by ASA.

The following questions and answers should assist you in understanding this new program:

  1. Who must be undergo a background check?
All umpires in Region 14 over the age of 18 must undergo a background check.  This includes umpires in the Greater San Joaquin Umpire Association.  Minors under 18 will not be subject to the background check.

  2. I already have had a background check for my job or another officiating assignment/group/city.  Will that substitute for this background check?
No, all adult umpires in Region 14 must undergo an ASA Background check

  3. What are the background checks looking for?
Click Here to download the information sheet.  This is a criminal record background search for certain specific convictions as listed on the information sheet.  This is NOT a financial background check.  Your credit report or other financial information will not be ascertained.

  4. How far back does the background check go?
The background check goes back 7 years.

  5. How are results reported?
The Commissioner and UIC receive notice that an official has either passed or failed the background check.  No details are given to the GSJUA as to why you failed the background check.

  6. Is there  an appeals process?
Yes, if this background check results in your disqualification as an umpire, volunteer, or coach, you may appeal the results as outlined under Article 505 of the ASA Code. The ASA Code can be found on line at www.softball.org/about/pdf/asa_code.pdf.  You may appeal directly to Matt Pfeifer, GSJSA Commissioner. He will evaluate an appeal on a case by case basis.  Certain factors, including whether you will only be working adult league ball, may be considered.

  7. How much does this cost.
The background check fee has been incorporated as part of your registration fee to GSJUA.  The fee is currently $4.50.  Minors do not get a background check they do not pay that fee.

  8. I failed, do I get a refund?
Some registration fees may be refunded to you.  Contact the GSJUA UIC with questions or concerns.
